Heimbecker Cup March 15th, 2019
Every spring there is a hum of excitement in the Ivor Wynne Centre as the Department of Kinesiology faculty, graduate and undergraduate students get together and participate in the Heimbecker Cup. For the last 18 years, this charitable hockey game has pitted undergraduate students against their graduate student TA’s and professors in a friendly game of Canada’s winter pastime. Not only is this annual event about fostering camaraderie within the Kinesiology program, it also aims to raise funds in memory of Joan Heimbecker. Joan was a Kinesiology graduate student who lost her life on campus in an act of domestic violence in 1994. To honour Joan’s memory, a scholarship and bursary were established in her name are awarded annually to two Kinesiology graduate students who embody Joan’s zest for life and commitment to community service. In addition, a donation is made to a local charitable organization that helps support victims of domestic violence, including a local women’s shelter this year.
This year’s tournament will be held on March 15, 2019 from 6 – 8 pm at the Morgan Firestone Arena in Ancaster.
