Welcome from the Chair

McMaster’s Department of Kinesiology is a vibrant community of faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students dedicated to the study of the science of human movement.

Our work supports the central mission of the Faculty of Science, which is to advance scientific discovery and knowledge and to promote scientific literacy and understanding in our community. In our classrooms, laboratories, and community partnerships, we strive to promote health and wellbeing while contributing to McMaster’s commitment to creating a brighter world.

Our undergraduate program is home to more than 800 students. They pursue a broad-based curriculum enriched by opportunities for focused inquiry and experiential learning through placements in our laboratories and in the community. Our program was recently ranked in the top three in Canada and among the top 25 in the world, out of nearly 400 institutions.

Graduate trainees can pursue research-based MSc and PhD degrees in three broad, overlapping areas: integrative physiology, mechanics and control of movement, and neuroscience and behaviour. Many of our faculty members, including five Research Chairs, are internationally recognized or are emerging leaders in their fields.

The Department is also home to the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE), a specialized centre devoted to physical activity, health, and wellbeing. PACE is a cornerstone of our teaching, research, and knowledge translation activities. Many of our initiatives through PACE focus on helping people living with chronic disease, disability, or age-related challenges, and it serves as a hub where students gain unique experiential learning opportunities alongside community members.

I invite you to learn more by exploring our website or connecting with us to see firsthand the impact of our people, research, and partnerships.
